An aspiring presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Goosie Tanoh, has described as “dangerous, bad and unacceptable” the shooting violence by vigilante groups perceived to be linked to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) at La Bawaleshie during the just-ended Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary bye-election in the Greater Accra Region.
The incident saw some sympathisers of the opposition NDC sustaining varied degrees of injuries.
The visibly worried Goosie Tanoh asserted that the violence was not only an indictment on the Ghana’s democratic dispensation, but an affront to the country’s rules and laws.
He, therefore, called on the national security agencies to immediately arrest and bring the perpetrators of this ‘gruesome’ act to book.
Addressing journalists after donating consumable items worth over GH¢15,000.00 to the shooting violence victims at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra on Tuesday, January 5, 2019, Mr Tanoh cautioned the vigilante groups of the NPP who exhibited the violence and stated that they will definitely pay for their actions and uncultured behaviours.
According to him, very little attempt was being made to prevent violence by agents of the leading political forces within the country, and stressed the need for all and sundry to join in the fight against political violence and vigilantism.
“Dear Comrades, On Thursday, January 31, 2019, I, like many right thinking Ghanaians, was outraged and appalled at the grave danger posed to your life (referring to Yaro Ishawu who suffered a broken leg) and the lives of many other members of the NDC resulting from the wanton violence and reckless disregard for human life allegedly perpetrated by vigilante operatives of the ruling NPP who it seems have infiltrated our national security forces and operate with abandon and impunity.
“How sad that you should meet such an unjust fate when you as the good citizens were exercising your sacred right to vote,” he lamented.
He stated that the Team Goosie 2020 and Organising for Ghana (O4GH) stand with the shooting violence victims and their families at this time distress.
“Your bravery and commitment as citizens first and as party members of our great party NDC is exemplary. Please accept our best wishes for a speedy recovery,” he consoled.
He noted that the victims can be assured that they have joined in the fight against political violence and vigilantism wherever and from whomever it originates from.
Mr Tanoh stressed that they will not rest until all forms of violence and vigilantism were rooted from the national political life in this country
“You and many deserving young people must be given every opportunity to become productive citizens of our dear country able to satisfy your basic material and other needs. Peace is an absolute necessity for the prosperity of all,” he advised.
